Stephen Nuño-Perez
Stephen received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from UC Irvine and his B.A. in Political Science from UCLA. He is currently the Director of the Hispanic and Emerging Communities Research Lab at Northern Arizona University (NAU). The HEC Lab is focused on training students who want to work in Public Policy, law, government, and the non-profit sectors. He shows students how they can use data to make an impact.
His research explores the relationship between Latinos and other minority groups and the American political system. He teaches courses on immigration, Latino politics, political participation, and research methods.
Prior to coming to NAU, Stephen spent eight years writing for NBC News. His writing has also been published in Reuters, Talking Points, Memo, the New York Times, and the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage Blog.
Stephen is also a consultant for BSP Research, a firm that helps non-profits, government agencies, and private entities. He recently worked on multiple public-facing projects for BAP Research for Justice Action Center, Climate Power, Immigration Hub, Power California, Univision, and Building Back Together.
Stephen talks about the importance of polling, focus groups, and community discussions as the foundation for understanding the needs and priorities of emerging communities, such as Latinos, Native Americans, young voters, and women.
